I’ll keep writing songs and making music and singing until the day I die. I figure that if you’ve got something to give, then give it. That’s what it’s there for”.
John and Rick Brewster are founding members and major songwriters of the legendary Angels, one of Australia’s most successful rock bands who smash attendance records wherever they play. The guys play lead and rhythm guitar and produced the band’s classic multi-platinum albums. After three decades, The Angels remain one of Australia’s most loved and respected bands. In 1998 The Angels were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. A few years ago Rick and John started a new break-away project, performing acoustically as ‘The Brewster Brothers’, creating an elusive new musical style that reflects Rick’s early classical piano training and John’s teenage years as a folk and acoustic performer. Using Harry Vanda’s Sydney studios, Rick and John created their debut album ‘Shadows Fall’, which really takes you on a journey into a musical place inhabited by the likes of Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan. After the success of the Australian festivals, events and recordings of 2007, John & Rick decided to join forces with Paul Robert Burton to form the Brewster Brothers Trio.
Phil Para is one of undoubtedly one of the most exciting performers in Australia. Phil’s distinctive guitar talents push all the boundaries and are combined with exceptional vocal abilities and a powerful stage presence. His energetic performance includes a remarkable degree of showmanship such as playing with his teeth and behind his head. Phil earns great respect from his peers and audiences alike and attracts a cult-like following wherever he plays.
New Zealander, Phil Para was already a professional musician at age 9 playing drums in his parent’s band and at 12 he began to teach himself guitar. Proving to be a natural and with Jimi Hendrix as his absent mentor and inspiration Phil’s talent soon grew to the point where he could accurately replicate the playing and vocal styles of the guitar greats including Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, & Carlos Santana to name a few.
Phil writes many original songs, which draw from a diverse range of music with blues, jazz, Latin and rock influences fusing into a style of his own. Phil’s performances combine original music with covers to create an exciting stage show that never fails to enthral.
Based in Australia for many years now, Phil claims vast and loyal audiences of an incredibly varied mix of ages and backgrounds and has been the mainstay of the famous Esplanade Hotel in Melbourne for many years now with a resident spot playing to hundreds, every Saturday. Phil released his first CD “MESSAGE” in 2000 and has another currently in production.
Renowned both locally and internationally many artists including Prince, Eric Burdon, Deep Purple & Metallica have all made a point catching Phil’s gigs when they have been in Melbourne.
Based around the songwriting of Kieran Kane and Kevin Welch, plus the acclaimed multi--instrumental talents of Fats Kaplin, KANE WELCH KAPLIN has now expanded into a four-piece band with the addition of Kieran’s son Lucas Kane on percussion and are acknowledged as leaders in the U.S. Americana Music movement.
Kieran and Kevin have both for many years written for top-selling U.S. mainstream country artists and started swapping songs on stage in the late 1990’s as a very “loose duo”, while still pursuing successful solo careers. In 2004 Fats came on board to record the highly acclaimed “You Can’t Save Everybody” album that launched the new trio format as a touring act - touring Australia in 2005.
In 2006 the “Lost John Dean” album topped the U.S. Americana Chart and earned an Americana Music Association nomination for “Group/Duo of the Year”
Their unique Folk-Country-Blues writing combined with their invigorating, live, seat-of-the-pants approach to recording is well demonstrated on their current self-titled album (Shock Records) which has received solid ABC Radio airplay across the country and confirmed them as favourites of Australian audiences.
On the 9th and 10th March 2007, Russell Morris and Brian Cadd, together with musicians Peter Robinson and Kevin Murphy, joined the Queensland Conservatorium Orchestra for two nights of concerts.
Both artists felt that this was surely going to be a high point in their nearly forty-year friendship and musical association… and they weren’t wrong!
With these fully acoustic orchestral concerts, Brian and Russell have begun a whole new chapter in performing together. This recording is the result of those two magic nights.
The challenge of picking material sympathetic to the paring of a classical orchestra with modern rock themes was met chiefly because the two of them could choose from such a huge body of work; both having been writers and performers for 4 decades separately and now, finally, together.
